Spinal and postural screening is a test conducted by your chiropractor that can help identify neuromusculoskeletal disorders before any serious issues arise. This test can find spinal alignment and postural positioning problems that haven't presented with actual symptoms yet, but if left untreated, may cause chronic conditions in the neck or back.
Why Screening Matters
Our bodies are meant to have all portions of the torso balanced — our heads, necks, shoulders, rib cage, spine, abdominal cavity, and pelvis must all be in proper alignment. When one system is out of alignment, it has a cascading effect on the rest of the body. The spine often compensates and bends to accommodate poor positioning, placing additional stress on surrounding tissues.
Conditions Detected by Screening
- Scoliosis
- Herniated disc
- Strained, sprained, or pulled muscles
- Sports injuries
- Chronic headaches
- Neck or back pain
- Shoulder injuries
The Screening Process
Static Screening: Assesses potential issues while you're not moving, including pelvic tilt, elevation posture, and rotation posture.
Dynamic Screening: Evaluates alignment while moving to identify how your body compensates for weight shifts. Tests include standing on one leg, push-ups, sitting to standing, and raising hands overhead.
After Your Screening
Your chiropractor will discuss results and help develop a personalized treatment plan that may include spinal manipulation, massage, and exercises to restore proper positioning.
